1.1 Learning to Read Independently
a. Before reading: previews illustrations, activates prior knowledge, and generates predictions about the story type
b. Preview text: holds book correctly, applies concepts about print (title, author, book parts, directionality of letters, words and text), locates known letters and/or words
c. During reading: matches voice to print, uses letter-sound links, applies concepts of phonemic awareness, determines relationship between illustrations and written text, understands that print conveys a message, utilizes picture, context and visual clues to predict unknown words
d. Uses self monitoring comprehension strategies to understand text read orally (assess and review predictions, make associations, question and clarify meaning)
e. Begin to acquire a basic sight vocabulary by identifying common words such as, environmental print, word families, some high frequency words
f. Read text when possible using basic sight word vocabulary, using meaning cues such as pictures to predict and understand the story line, using structure cues such as language structure to gain meaning and determine unfamiliar words, using visual cues by applying letter-sound association concepts
g. After reading, demonstrates understanding and interpretation of the text by retelling the story orally or by drawing, constructing a written or oral response, answering questions, supporting answers by revisiting the text
