Letter Oo

Activities   Songs and Poems   Sing Along Song 1 and 2

The letter-sound association we are studying this week is "O o" as in "octopus." Here are some activities your child can do to supplement our classroom activities.

1. Play "ON or IN." Place a small box, with a lid that can be opened, on the table and place a small toy next to it. Tell your child you are going to pronounce some words that begin with "O" as in on or "I" as in in. If the word begins like "on," place the toy "on" the box; if like "in," it should go "in" the box.

omelette      it      ox      onward      olive      itchy      interesting      if opposite      itself      opera      ink      October      indoors      insects      oddly

2. Play "Big O." Pronounce a series of words. If the word begins with the short o sound, ask your child to form a large O by raising his/her hands above his/her head with fingertips touching. Hands remain down if the word begins with another sound. Say the following words:

October, olive, on, cat, octopus, policeman, operator, butter, oxen, give, otter, operation, add, barn, opposite, cardinal, ostrich, oxygen ...

3. A word guessing game: All the words you guess should begin with the "O o" sound.
a. Halloween comes on the last day of the month of _____. (October)
b. The sales clerk said to be sure the sweater would fit you can try it____. (on)
c. An animal that has eight arms and lives in the ocean is an____. (octopus)
d. That three legged animal with green polka dots certainly looks ____. (odd)

4. Octopus Stories: Have your child draw pictures of an octopus having an adventure in the ocean. Have him/her tell you a story to go with the pictures and you write the words down for him/her. Then have your child find all the O's in his/her story and trace them with an orange crayon.

5. Art Activity: "Octopus in the Ocean" Give your child a butter tub to use as the body of an octopus. Have him/her cut out 8 legs and tape them to the lid then put the lid on the upside-down tub. Use markers to add eyes, mouth and other features.

6. Look through magazines to find pictures of things beginning like "octopus." Glue them to a piece of paper and have your child label the pictures using invented spelling. Your child should try to guess how each word is spelled. It may help if an adult says each word clearly, so your child can listen to each of the sounds at the beginning, middle and end. Your child should write his/her letter guesses under each picture.

7. Show your child how to make "O o" this way:

Start at the top, curve down to the left and touch the botom line. Then come back up and close your Oo.
