Letter Gg

Activities   Songs and Poems   Sing Along Songs 1 or 2

Q. What is at the end of everything?
A. The letter G.

The letter-sound association we are studying this week is "G g" as in "galloping goat." (We will not be studying the "soft g" sound you hear at the beginning of the word "giraffe.") Here are some activities your child can do to supplement our classroom activities.

1. Play a Listening game: "Gallop" when you hear a word that begins like "goat." If your child can hear many letter sounds then read the list again and have your child say if he/she hears the "G g" sound at the beginning, middle or end of each word or doesn't hear it at all.

goat, wiggle, pig, gate, ghost, goose, dog, snuggle, gopher, gumbo, begin, gas, stegosaurus, gobbler, big, gum, guppy, egg, giggle, gallery, guess, bag, gorilla, juggle, bug, game...

2. Play a Listening game.
Which words in each sentence begin with the "G g" sound as in "gorilla"?

a. "Good morning, boys and girls," said Mrs. Jones.
b. Gordon got his guitar and sang for us.
c. We need gas to go for a ride in the car.
d. That goat can drink a gallon of water.
e. Let's play a guessing game.

3. Play a Word Guessing game.
All your guesses should begin with the "G g" sound.

a. "Candyland" and "Hungry, Hungry Hippos" are good ________. (games)
b. I grow flowers and vegetables in my ________. (garden)
c. On your birthday you will be given a present.
Another word for present is _______. (gift)
d. In a treasure chest the coins may be silver or _______. (gold)
e. I am thinking of something you buy at the store. It is sweet and you can chew it for a long time. It is sticky chewing _________. (gum)

4. Make a big picture of a ghost on a piece of white paper. Cut out "G g" from a newspaper and glue them on the ghost. Find magazine pictures or draw pictures beginning with the "G g" sound on the ghost. Have your child label the pictures using "invented spelling." Your child should guess how each word is spelled and write his/her letter guesses under each picture.

5. Sing My Silly Billy Goat to the tune of "The Wheels on the Bus." My silly billy goat eats my clothes off the line, my clothes of the line, my clothes off the line, My silly billy goat eats my clothes off the line, As soon as I hang them up! Replace "my clothes off the line" with new verses: my shirt and my pants, my shoes and my socks, my towel and my shorts...

6. Show your child how to make "G g" this way:

G: Start at the top and make a curved line towards the left and to the bottom (like a C) and go back up halfway, then make a line to the left. g: Make a circle then make a straight line on the right side of the circle that curves to the left at the bottom.

Gumballs - Song
Tune: Muffin Man

Oh do you know the gumball man, the gumball man, the gumball man,
Oh do you know the gumball man, he comes just once a week.
When we put our nickels in the slot, our nickels in the slot, our nickels in the slot,
This is what we got.

_________ and _________ (children's names) both got red
_________ and _________ both got red, but _______ got blue.
Maybe someday we'll be lucky, and instead of one gumball we'll get two.

I'm a Little Groundhog
Tune: I'm a Little Teapot

I'm a little groundhog,
Furry and brown.
When winter comes
I sleep underground.
I'm curled up
As cozy as can be.
When it's spring,
Please wake up me!

Hard G and Soft G
/g/and /j/
Tune: The Wheels on the Bus
from Phonics Fun K-1 by Carson Dellosa

Sometimes the g says,
"J" "J" "J"--"J" "J""J"--"J""J" "J"
Sometimes the g
says, "J" "J" "J".
I'll tell you why!

If after the g you see an i,
Or an e or a y,
They all make the g say, "J" "J" "J".
You give it a try.

G is soft in gym and gel,
gym and gel, gym and gel,
G is soft in gym and gel,
And now you know why!
